The Object Law Rules
The Object Law and the Breakdown Rules
I have selected this Audio Cassette example because it is so very simple. However, as we progress you will see that the exact same logic is applicable no matter how large or complicated the planning subject is.
The Rules:
Would you now carefully read through the five rules that are listed to the right.
Hopefully this comes across as simple common sense. However, if my language is not clear, it is likely that the practical examples I will put forward, will resolve any confusion.
In the next frame I will show you a very simple way to remember the essence of this concept.
Simplification
Rather than expect you to remember these five rules, I can summarise this piece of logic as follows:
The WHOLE is the sum of the PARTS.
Or if you would like a more comprehensive summary:
The WHOLE is the sum of the PARTS — and nothing else.
If you can only remember one concept from this module, let it be:
The WHOLE is the sum of the PARTS
An Example
To illustrate the concepts I have put forward so far, here is a `very very' simple (but practical) example.
In this example, the top box represents the complete solution or goal that is desired — an `Effective Telephone Directory...'
The first level or breakdown boxes represent `Major Solution Parts' of the proposed Telephone Directory.
The lowest level boxes, represent `manageable pieces' of the project.
Of course. . . it is very important that all the pieces are identified and that none are overlooked.
During the process of developing APT, I discovered a simple, innovative method to effectively address this critical issue. I'll describe this in a later session.
Key points to remember - Object Breakdown Thinking
Good planning is simply clear organised thinking.
If you know how, big (complex) things can always be broken down into their logical component parts.
If you breakdown a big projects or operations down into 'manageable bite' parts, they become more deliverable.
The most important concept in APT is the Object Law - The WHOLE is the sum of the PARTS.
If you can develop a clear understanding of all the PARTS and if your breakdown structure is correct, you then have an informed understanding of the WHOLE.
If you express your thinking in a way that is congruent with the Object Law, you will have clear organised thinking.
The instant you deviate from the Object Law, your thinking becomes fuzzy.
APT is a simple systematic method that enables you to identify the component parts of any business, operation or project.
