Introduction

Who is this for?

The simple answer — is anyone who needs to turn conceptual ideas, into clear organized thinking. Thinking that can be quickly turned into doable action plans.

Your role might be some type of a manager. Or a not-for-profit administrator. Or maybe a social events organizer.

Or maybe..

Perhaps you’re a coach or consultant. And you may wish to facilitate or teach this planning method to others. I’ll talk about this later. And there is no sales pitch. I’m retired, and again, it’s free, there is nothing to buy.

My Special People: These are the participants of my public or corporate seminar/workshops in New Zealand, Australia or Canada. (Many of these have become personal friends). This content should be a good refresher and update for you.

The NASA connection

Long story short. I was given an introduction to a senior manager at NASA HQ. This man was fascinated that someone from “Nu Zealand’ wanted to know so much about NASA’s planning methods.

Over a five-month period, I was provided with significant documentation on how NASA planned the Apollo moon landing mission. They also answered numerous questions I had. This was before the internet and email etc. So hour-long toll calls to the USA were expensive, but a worthwhile investment.

From all of this, I gained an understanding of a cleaver approach that enabled NASA to simplify very complex problems into doable action steps. And have better confidence in planning decisions.

My next step was to adapt and simplify the NASA aerospace planning technique into simpler steps that suited my own business needs.

Initially, all this learning was just for my own benefit. The idea of teaching others came later. But that’s another story.

Making a mind shift

My purpose and goal is to quickly make planning simpler, faster, and better for you.

To achieve this, I’m going to ask you to think about the planning process from a different perspective.

The business jargon for this is making a ‘paradigm shift’.

AS well as speed and simplicity, you may also experience an innovation boost.

What knowledge do I need?

If I do my job properly, I’d like to think that you will not need in previous business or project planning training, But, this may be a bold claim. I will let you be the judge on this.

However, the following is important. For business planning, it will be necessary for you to have a reasonable understanding of your products or services.

If it’s project planning, then you will need a reasonable understanding of the project’s core fundamentals.

More on this later.

The good news. In the action planning section, I’ll show to do action plans when you are struggling with the what-to-do knowledge.

The Marketing Plan or the Human Resource Plan may be good examples.

When NASA were planning the moon landing, there were numerous how-to’s and ‘don’t knows’ they had to handle. A good planning process should address this likely need.

Are you skeptical?

I’m okay with you having concerns or reservations. In many ways, being skeptical can make good sense.

I see it as my job to put forward a clear explanation that makes sense to you, and your situation.

You be the judge.

Why Free?

The Basic idea came from my sun Peter. He said, “Dad, I don’t want APT to die with you. I want you to put the basics of your workup on the web so other may learn it – and use it.

And I’ve worked  as an APT instructor, facilitator and coach for some 25 year. Doing this time, I met lots of very interesting people. In lots of different roles.

Many of these people were smarter than me. So, while they were learning APT, I was learning heaps about businesses and organisations and non-profits and all levels of educational establishments. And I learnt a lot about Vision and Leadership and the magic art of Strategy.

Plus, I was being well paid for ‘working’ on my passion. So, what I’m giving you is forward pay-back. So, I’m calling this my Legacy Project.

If you like what you learn here, then here’s a payback idea. You might  like to send a link to one or two of your friends or associates who are needing to plan something.
